Dietary Volunteer for LewisGale Hospital Montgomery Blacksburg, VA August - September 2015
At LewisGale Hospital I volunteered four hours a week in the Nutrition Services Department. As a dietary volunteer, I primarily worked with the diet clerk to take patient food orders. I also delivered meals to patients’ rooms and assisted patients who have physical limitations. While volunteering in the department, I was exposed to a wide variety of modified diets, the preparation of these food items, and the use of thickeners in changing the texture of foods. Since most patients were on restrictive diets, I familiarized myself with the restrictive diet guidelines and made no mistakes when delivering them to patients. This experience enhanced my understanding of the roles and relationships of the nutrition services department.
