Intern for Case Country Road Farm
Glade Spring, VA
June 2014 - July 2014
Case Country Road Farm is a 62 acre organic family-owned farm. As an intern, I provided assistance with day-to-day labor. During weekdays, I assisted with greenhouse planting, weeding, composting, harvesting and the general upkeep of the farm. The owner of the farm often shared her knowledge on sustainable and organic farming practice. Working everyday from 8am to 4pm, I learned to appreciate just how much work farmers put into growing foods. My favorite part of the experience was working at the Glade Spring Farmers Market on Saturdays. I would help the owner set up her stand and make labels for the produce and baked goods that we were selling. In addition to handling market sales, I got to meet local farmers and business owners that sell handmade products. They taught me so much, from starting a small business to approaches in building a more sustainable community. The experience inspired me to start my own garden upon returning to school.
